Dak Prescott to Patriots? Oddsmakers Weigh in on QB's Future

Depending on how the Patriots' QB situation plays out this year, they could be on the lookout for another quarterback in 2021.

Now that quarterback Dak Prescott and the Dallas Cowboys have failed to reached an extension after the veteran QB was franchised tagged earlier this offseason, oddsmakers are weighing in as to where Prescott could wind up in 2021. 

Among their list of suitors for Dallas' star is the New England Patriots, who could be in the market for a quarterback after this upcoming season.

Although New England's odds aren't very strong for signing Prescott, those numbers could change depending on how the 2020 season plays out. 

As it stands, Cam Newton, who the Patriot signed on June 28, is on a one-year deal, which makes him slated to be a free agent in 2021 (unless New England decides to franchise tag him, which they reportedly can do if they want to). As for Jarrett Stidham, his rookie deal expires in 2022. 

If Newton doesn't play well enough this upcoming season to convince the six-time Super Bowl champions to retain him, then New England will be left with Stidham and possibly Brian Hoyer as the remaining QBs on the depth chart in 2021. While the team could opt to push forward with Stidham as their starting quarterback, which nearly happened this year before they signed Newton for the right price, there's no doubt they will nose around the free-agent market to see what's available. 

That's where Prescott comes into play. Given that he rejected the Cowboys' offer of $35 million per year this offseason, per CowboyMaven's Mike Fisher, it's hard to imagine that Bill Belichick and company would offer the veteran QB a contract that surpassed that number, let alone even came close to it. 

Because of that, it's not likely that Dak Prescott becomes a Patriot. But it's not impossible. With Belichick's pedigree for winning football games at the biggest stage, it's not hard to believe he can convince many players to take a pay cut to play for him. So if Prescott wants to win a championship more than he wants to make a lot of money, New England would be the perfect team for him next year. But that's only if the Patriots are interested as well.
