Ravens Moving On From Marcus Peters via Free Agency?

The Baltimore Ravens general manager's comments about veteran defender Marcus Peters at the NFL Scouting Combine carried a sense of finality.

Baltimore Ravens general manager Eric DeCosta addressed the status of one of his most prominent free agents, but there seemed to be a sense of nostalgia to his comments.

Cornerback Marcus Peters, 30, is set to hit unrestricted free agency after four seasons in Baltimore. While DeCosta promised "ongoing" communication with Peters' camp, acknowledgment of his potential departure and reminiscing on his Charm City success seemed to hint that his days in purple could be numbered.

"Marcus Peters is a free agent," DeCosta said as he spoke at the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis. "He's a guy that I hold in very, very high regard. I had a few conversations with Marcus' agent, who is a good friend. Marcus is a great friend. He and I have communicated, and that will be ongoing. When you talk about true Ravens - guys that have done a lot for the team - for me, for the Ravens over the last four years, Marcus is on that list."

As it stands, the Ravens have $24.2 million in cap space to spend this offseason, ranking ninth in the NFL as the free agency period looms.

In parts of three seasons since coming over from the Los Angeles Rams in an October 2019 trade, Peters has earned 99 tackles, eight interceptions, and four forced fumbles. His most notable moment in a Ravens uniform came in the opening round of the 2020-21 playoffs allowed Baltimore to seal an upset win over Tennessee. He skipped the whole 2021-22 season after suffering a torn ACL shortly before the season began.

Peters and fellow veteran cornerback Kyle Fuller are up for free agency this spring. Baltimore's secondary has already lost safeties coach D'Anton Lynn, who took the defensive coordinator job at UCLA. The Ravens' pass defense ranked 26th in yards allowed but allowed only 20 aerial touchdown passes, good for the fifth-best rate in the league.
