Ravens Signing of Edge Rusher Melvin Ingram Proposed By PFF

Should the Baltimore Ravens sign free agent edge rusher Melvin Ingram before the season begins?

Like the rest of the NFL, the Baltimore Ravens are enjoying a well-earned break with OTAs in the rear-view mirror and training camp is still a few weeks out.

When training camp begins, the Ravens will wrap up their busy offseason and prepare for the highly-anticipated regular season. The Ravens made big moves in the draft and free agency and re-signed quarterback Lamar Jackson, so fans are eager to see those moves play out on the field. That said, there's still time to make even more moves before the season kicks off.

According to PFF, one such move the Ravens should consider is signing free agent edge rusher Melvin Ingram. An 11-year NFL veteran, Ingram is still producing well into his mid 30s, but still remains a free agent deep into June, potentially making him a strong last-minute pickup for Baltimore.

"Ingram has been a pillar of consistency in the NFL, recording nine straight seasons with a 70.0-plus pass-rush grade," PFF writes. "A year after Ingram was traded to the Kansas City Chiefs and immediately became their best edge defender for the stretch run, he signed a steal of a one-year deal with the Dolphins and once again played at a very high level, far outpacing his compensation."

This isn't the first time Ingram and the Ravens have been connected. Rumors swirled about the Ravens having interest in Ingram during the 2021 offseason, but those rumors never amounted to anything and they instead signed Justin Houston. Meanwhile, Ingram signed with the division-rival Pittsburgh Steelers before being traded to the Chiefs during that season. He played with the Miami Dolphins in 2022 and recorded six sacks, the second-most on the team.

Speaking of Houston, his departure this offseason is part of the reason why PFF believes the Ravens should sign Ingram. His veteran leadership could be valuable for the Ravens' pass-rushers, especially with David Ojabo and Tyus Bowser missing significant time last season and Odafe Oweh adjusting to a much larger role.

Even with the Ravens boasting one of the better pass rushes in the league in 2022, finishing tied for fifth in sacks with 48, adding a player as accomplished as Ingram is rarely a bad idea.
