Ravens Acknowledge Recent Arrest Of Starting WR Rashod Bateman On Family Violence Charges

In this story:
The Baltimore Ravens acknowledged in a statement Friday night that they are aware of the arrest of starting receiver Rashod Bateman in Atlanta this spring on charges of family violence.
Bateman was in Minnesota with the team this week for practices with the Vikings ahead of their preseason game Saturday, and he was selected to speak with the media this week as well. Bateman, a former first-round pick who has had a mercurial tenure with the team, was away from the team for part of their offseason program and, according to TMZ, which broke the story, he turned himself in to authorities on June 3.
In response to the reporting on their player, the Ravens issued the following statement: “We are aware of the situation involving Rashod and have been in direct communication with him. We notified the league office and have been cooperating throughout the process. As this is a pending legal matter, we will not have further comment.”
The Ravens organization has been criticized in the past for handling serious allegations against players like Ray Rice and Terrell Suggs and kicker Justin Tucker just a few years ago. Bateman was not going to participate in the game Saturday, with head coach Jesse Minter resting his top players.
According to the arrest warrant, as reported by TMZ, Bateman allegedly shattered a car window with the mother of his child and his three-month-old child inside. Police on the scene noted they saw broken glass and small lacerations and multiple contusions to the alleged victim's face.
Bateman spoke on Thursday with the media and suggested that the new coaching staff and offense would be good for him this season.
“I would definitely say I could benefit from the situation that I'm in,” Bateman said. “Honestly, I think wherever these coaches and this staff puts me, I think the whole team is bound to have success. There's a lot of different guys that are capable of doing a lot of things, and we've showcased that in Training Camp, and I think that'll carry on into the season."
Yet To Live Up To His Draft Hype
The Ravens have strongly entertained trading Bateman in the past, with his attitude and sporadic productivity both playing a role, according to multiple team and league sources at the time. Some believe young veteran Devontez Walker could cut into Bateman's playing time, as well as this rookie class, with third-round pick Ja'Kobi Lane a camp revelation. However, Bateman has a very team-friendly contract, given he lost a year of service toward free agency from an ill-advised short holdout, and he also churned through serval agents in the process.
Bateman played at a strong level in 2024, but has failed to connect regularly with quarterback Lamar Jackson outside of that and the team drafted consecutive receivers knowing that position was an area of concern beyond Pro Bowler Zay Flowers. Bateman is set to make $6.5M this season and has $3.5M in injury guarantees in 2027.
He is facing three charges, per the TMZ report.
