Seahawks Plans for Geno Smith: Contract or Franchise Tag?

Reports are indicating the Seattle Seahawks have made a significant decision regarding their future with quarterback Geno Smith.

As he's set to potentially enter free agency, Geno Smith has made it clear: he wants to remain quarterback of the Seattle Seahawks next season.

There's been no indication that the feeling isn't mutual from the front office as Seattle's offseason rolls on, as there's been a lack of drama with how things might turn out for both parties. However, per reports Saturday from The Athletic, a continued relationship won't get done via the franchise tag, as the Seahawks would rather not use the tag on Smith.

Considering that Smith said things are "looking very good" in regards to getting a new contract done, this report is the best news the 32-year-old as of now. Of course, Smith would still be guaranteed around $32.4 million next season if tagged, but would not have a long-term future secured.

If the Seahawks want to keep Smith without using the franchise tag, it means he's nearly guaranteed a big contract. That dotted line would then come from the Seahawks or another team if Seattle suddenly decides to move on. The latter hardly seems likely based on Smith's recent comments.

“We’re in the process of getting all that settled right now,” Smith told SiriusXM NFL Radio on Friday. “It’s looking very good.”

Smith had a campaign to remember this season considering all the outside noise and doubts that clouded around him before the year began. He earned his first-ever Pro Bowl nod and set Seattle single-season franchise records in passing yards (4,282), completions (399), completion percentage (69.8) and passing attempts (572).

Smith was also named a finalist for the NFL's Comeback Player of the Year Award, adding to what was undoubtedly the best season of his career.

Now, he's focused on taking another leap forward in a place where his heart is.

“I love Seattle,” Smith said. “We have a great relationship. I think we’ll work things out.”
