Seahawks Sign Versatile DT LaTrell Bumphus as Undrafted Free Agent

It's unlikely that the Seattle Seahawks will utilize LaTrell Bumphus' receiving skillset on an offense that was one of the league's most tight end-happy units last season, but it certainly makes for an intriguing thought.

The Seattle Seahawks have made what seems like countless undrafted free agent signings this offseason. And with OTAs beginning on Monday, they showed they clearly weren't done adding to the list.

The Seahawks announced that they've signed former Tennessee Volunteers defensive tackle LaTrell Bumphus to an undrafted free agent deal. The team waived linebacker  Chris Garrett in a corresponding move.

But Bumphus, who played five seasons with the Vols, isn't your typical big body on the defensive front. Though he's got solid size at 6-3, 290 pounds, it's his background as a tight end that makes him an interesting prospect.

Along with finishing his collegiate career with 66 total tackles, three sacks, 12 tackles for loss, two passes defended, one forced fumble and two fumble recoveries, Bumphus played in all 12 games as a reserve tight end and on special teams during the 2018 season, per Tennessee's athletic department website. Appearing in mostly two tight end sets, Bumphus made his first-career start at tight end in Oct. 2018 against South Carolina before switching back to the defensive line after that season.

No, it's unlikely that the Seahawks will utilize Bumphus' receiving skillset on an offense that was one of the league's most tight end-happy units last season, but it certainly makes for an intriguing thought.

But who knows? Maybe the Seahawks could line up Bumphus at tight end on the goal line and use him in a classic play-action or jump-pass scenario that the defense won't see coming. Quick! Better pencil in your long-shot bets for Bumphus to be a one-time touchdown scorer next season.

But until then, let's get through OTAs first and save the imagination for when the complete 53-man roster is set. Bumphus will be looking to prove he belongs before finals cuts are made.
