Seahawks 2023 Predictions: Will Cinderella Lose Her Slipper?

The Seattle Seahawks were an unlikely success story this past season. Will lightning strike twice?

The Seattle Seahawks proved to be the unlikeliest of success stories this past season, as they made the playoffs during what was supposed to be a rebuilding year.

But will lightning strike twice?

Sports Illustrated doesn't seem to think so. In the site's release of 2023 predictions for all 32 teams, the Seahawks get the pessimistic end of the stick, as they're projected to meet the low level of expectations that was set for them headed into the 2022 campaign.

Here's what SI had to say about Seattle falling "back to Earth."

Prediction: They will fall back to Earth in 2023.

This prediction brings me no joy, and I am sure I will end up on one of the fan base’s artfully produced videos that dunk on their legion of haters. I will deserve it and I will be proud to serve as kindling for their brilliance. All that said, Seattle’s 2023 opponent slate is pretty merciless. The Rams will be better, and they get an NFC East that pushed three teams into the playoffs in 2022. The Bengals, Ravens, Steelers and Lions are also on the slate and make for a difficult, uphill climb.

The Seahawks saw a large portion of their success come on the heels of a successful rookie class. The team could improve even further after April's draft if this is to be a pattern.

However, expecting similar rookie production in 2023 might be a waste of energy, as Seattle had an unprecedented season from its youngsters. And now that guys like Tariq Woolen, Kenneth Walker III and Charles Cross have all made an NFL names for themselves, they won't be catching any teams by surprise.

Additionally, quarterback Geno Smith - who is likely to get a major contract from Seattle - will have to once again prove himself worthy of being in the elite tier of signal-callers. The "one-hit wonder" burden might be lingering over his head.

The Seahawks did the unlikely by making it to the postseason while Russell Wilson crumbled with the Denver Broncos. But another Cinderella-like trip to the ball would be even more impressive next season considering some of the adversity and expectations that's set to come Seattle's way.
