Josh McDaniels' Wild Reason for Kicking FG at End of Steelers Game

The Pittsburgh Steelers walked away winners after a questionable call from the Las Vegas Raiders.

PITTSBURGH -- The Pittsburgh Steelers held strong in a game that came down to the wire against the Las Vegas Raiders in Week 3. And while plenty of attention was on Pittsburgh's offensive resurgence, Vegas's decision-making with the ball led to plenty of questions.

Down eight with 2:25 left on the clock and on Pittsburgh's 8-yard line, head coach Josh McDaniels elected to kick a field goal instead of going for it on fourth down. The result cut the Steelers' lead to five, but Kenny Pickett and company were able to gain a first down on the following drive, ending the game without Vegas getting another shot.

After the game, McDaniels was asked about the decision, and had social media baffled by his answer.

"We would've needed another possession anyway. It's not a lack of confidence. We went for it multiple times," McDaniels said.

Instantly, there was a response.

McDaniels did acknowledge he had a decision to make in the moment, but elected to go for the points immediately and try to get the ball back.

"I mean, you have two choices there. You try and make it a five-point game where you have an opportunity to win it with a touchdown if you get the ball back, or you try to go for it there," McDaniels said. "And then if you happen to convert, then you have to make the two-point conversion and all the rest of it. So, just those are the decisions you have to make. I thought we did a decent job of putting ourselves in third down there the next series with the defense to try to have a play to get off the field and we just didn't handle that play very well."
