Steelers CB Patrick Peterson Tells Favorite Mike Tomlin Story

Patrick Peterson has a fond memory of Mike Tomlin before he joined the Pittsburgh Steelers.

PITTSBURGH -- Pittsburgh Steelers cornerback Patrick Peterson has a favorite phrase from his new head coach Mike Tomlin. "It's a big game because we're in it."

As Peterson was introduced to Steelers Nation, conducting a welcome press conference for media and fans, he spent a moment looking back at his time with Tomlin.

The two crossed paths when Peterson's cousin, Bryant McFadden, played corner for the Steelers. They met again when Peterson was coming out of college and entering the NFL Draft. But Peterson's favorite moment, looking back, came during their time playing against each other.

"I had blocked a field goal the game before," Peterson said. "[Tomlin] knew I had a good jump coming off the right side. So, I can’t remember who was the holder, but they never gave us the flash: anytime the holder [would] hold his hand up that means the ball was coming. They ended up giving me a flash and I jumped offsides and I hurried up, and tried to call a timeout. Coach looked at me and told me, ‘I got you.’"

The Steelers won that game 32-20 against the Arizona Cardinals, and that moment stuck with the All-Pro corner for the next 11 years.

Across the league, players have stories like this with Tomlin from a bunch of different occasions. The Steelers coach is always playing with guys before, during and after games - just like he's always looking to bring older stars in that he wanted to get in the NFL Draft but couldn't.

It's just a Mike Tomlin thing.

Peterson will hopefully have new favorite Tomlin moments during his two years in Pittsburgh, including a run for a Super Bowl that he's optimistic about.
