Former Player Says Steelers Set to Replace Dotson, Daniels and Cole

One former lineman believes the Pittsburgh Steelers are changing three offensive line starters this year.

PITTSBURGH -- The Pittsburgh Steelers made two offensive line signings in free agency, bringing in Nate Herbig and Isaac Seumalo for the 2023 season. And in the mind of one former NFL player, that means they're set to replace both of their starting interior linemen, and the third is coming soon.

During an appearance on 93.7 The Fan, former Cowboys and Eagles lineman Brian Baldinger said the Steelers got two stars in their former Philadelphia guards.

"These are two guys you can count on to lead the charge," Baldinger said. "What it does for a young quarterback like Kenny Pickett is he is going to be able to step up into the pocket. Most of these guys can avoid quick edge pressure, what they can’t avoid is pressure up the middle. If you can slow that burst up the middle down with guys who can really anchor up, it gives your quarterback a lot of confidence to step up and make the throw."

He sees the signings as a change of guard(s) - literally - and expects Herbig to replace Kevin Dotson and Seumalo to replace James Daniels.

Then, he sees a rookie center replacing Mason Cole.

"They are going to fight it out. There is competition there," Baldinger said on the right guard competition. "I’m sure that Nate Herbig wasn’t thrilled when they signed Isaac last night. If Daniels comes back and he is in shape and plays better than he did last year, maybe he’ll win.

"It’s a good draft for centers," Baldinger continued. "I don’t know (about Daniels). He was a good center at Iowa. I haven’t been in love with him the last couple of years and what he’s done. I thought he was a better player coming out of Iowa, than he is to me right now."

Reports from Pittsburgh Post-Gazette's Gerry Dulac say the Steelers' plan is to make Seumalo the starting left guard while Herbig becomes the swing guard.

Dotson's future is unknown right now, and drafting a center could be on the Steelers' radar. If they do draft another interior lineman, Dotson could be on the trade block before the season.
