Steelers Noncommittal On Free Agent Lineman Replacing Current Starters

In this story:
PITTSBURGH -- The Pittsburgh Steelers are addressing their newest additions during the annual NFL League Meetings over in Pheonix, Arizona - and first on head coach Mike Tomlin's agenda was discussing the offensive line.
During a session with the media, Tomlin was asked about why the team went out and signed two offensive guards in free agency. Many believed the deals with Nate Herbig and Isaac Seumalo were to replace Kevin Dotson, but according to the head coach, it was more of a precautionary act after last season.
"We just thought the more starter-capable and starting experience-like guys, we could add to the group we had an opportunity to create competition and raise our floor," Tomlin told reporters at the League Meetings. "I think we were fortunate last year. The five primary starters made every football game, so our depth was not challenged."
Tomlin may not have named anyone a starter in March, but he did say the door will be open for their three new signings - tackle Le'Raven Clark included - to compete for starting jobs this summer.
"We just felt like it was appropriate to create competition and you do that with capable people, specifically guys who are capable with experience. We'll get those guys in a competitive camp situation and come up with the best five."
Creating competition does leave the door open for Herbig and Seumalo to compete with Dotson and possibly James Daniels this offseason. With one year left on his rookie contract, though, it's more likely Pittsburgh will look to replace Dotson than anyone on the line this summer.
And having Seumalo and Herbig around for the next two to three years allows them to do so - if they see fit.
