Steelers Could Sign Super Bowl Champion

The Pittsburgh Steelers have another option at tackle.

PITTSBURGH -- The Pittsburgh Steelers are still looking for options at offensive tackle, and while the NFL Draft may be their first choice, a Super Bowl champion free agent could make a lot of sense for this team.

Donovan Smith remains on the open market this spring at 30-years-old. The two-time Super Bowl champion has started every season since enetering the league in 2015, recording 136 starts in 136 games played. He spent eight years with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers before signing a one-year deal with the Kansas City Chiefs last season.

According to Pro Football Focus, the Steelers should be able to sign Smith to a one-year deal worth roughly $2.5 million. This wouldn't put much of a damper on their salary cap space, and still allow them to sign all intended draft picks.

The only downside to Smith is his inexperience playing the right side. Essentially, the move would be an upgrade over Dan Moore Jr. If the Steelers unable to add a tackle through the draft, they could look at the veteran as a winning veteran who could increase the security of their offensive line. It's a bridge move at best, but one that presents the team with a higher ceiling in 2024.

The move would likely come after the NFL Draft, barring no change with the rookie class. If the Steelers are unable to land a player they believe to be an instant-starter, Smith becomes an option - and a cheap one at that. Otherwise, expect a rookie to be the competition to Moore this summer.
