Houston Homecoming: Should Texans Trade For Cardinals WR DeAndre Hopkins?

The Cardinals are still trying to find a trade partner for All-Pro receiver DeAndre Hopkins, and the Houston Texans should consider reuniting with their former star wideout.

HOUSTON — Former Houston Texans wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins is on the move again for the second time since 2020. The Arizona Cardinals are taking trade calls on the three-time All-Pro receiver, and the asking price for Hopkins appears to have decreased.

Hopkins confirmed on social media Sunday afternoon that he is not looking for more money, which could open the door for more suitors. Given that the Cardinals may have to trade Hopkins for half his on-field value, the Texans should consider reuniting with their former star wideout.

The Texans have the draft capital and salary cap space to welcome Hopkins back to Houston. But more importantly, the acquisition of Hopkins would help improve a wide receiving corps that has been subpar since his exit.

Over the previous three seasons, Brandin Cooks has served as the Texans' best wide receiver. But after trading him to the Dallas Cowboys in March, the Texans do not have a wideout who can take the helm as the team's top target in 2023.

A reunion with Hopkins would give the Texans a top wide receiver in the passing game. But his arrival would also give Nico Collins and John Metchie III another veteran within the position group to rely upon for guidance.

Arizona landed Hopkins in a trade with the Texans in March 2020. He has played three seasons with the Cardinals. But due to injuries and a six-game suspension at the start of the 2022 campaign, Hopkins' production has taken a slight decline from his first stint with the Texans.

The five-time Pro Bowler has six seasons where he recorded over 1,000 yards in receiving — five came as a member of the Texans. He has recorded 11,298 yards and 71 touchdowns since Houston made him a first-round pick (no. 27 overall) in the 2013 NFL Draft.

Houston traded Hopkins and a fourth-round pick in the 2020 NFL Draft to Arizona for running back David Johnson, a 2020 second-round pick and a 2021 fourth-round pick.
