NASHVILLE — The Tennessee Titans are waiting to hear where free agent wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins will play in 2023 and the hope is that is will be in Nashville. We got a recent update on the Hopkins' situation from Jeremy Fowler of ESPN and, as expected, patience will be necessary as the situation unfolds.

Fowler spoke on ESPN's flagship program "SportsCenter" on Sunday and gave the most recent update:

"There's a lull in action right now. Training camp's not for a month, not a lot of rush. He met with the Titans, met with the Patriots. Both teams made clear that they have major interest in signing him. I'm told there is some mutual interest and respect between the Patriots and Hopkins, that something could go down, but they couldn't get that deal done while he was on the visit. You still have teams, like maybe the Chiefs, if they could clear up some money later, closer to training camp, then they could get involved. There's some contenders there but right now, he is staying put and waiting for the right situation."

This was always the expected path. There is a major dead period in the NFL calendar during June and early July that wouldn't require Hopkins to be involved in any team activities. Why would he sign now and hurt his own possibilities?

While it would be nice to see Hopkins select a team as soon as possible and end the waiting game, the reality is that makes no sense for Hopkins, who wants to maximize his earnings in 2023.

We know the Titans and Patriots are involved here, but all it takes is one major injury or turn of events and all the sudden there could be a new team in the running that is willing to pay Hopkins even more than the Titans or Patriots.

As Fowler points out, there is even a team like Kansas City who could make a last chance effort. While I am under the belief the Titans give Hopkins a better chance to win than the Patriots, the Chiefs would certainly trump either teams' winning pitch to Hopkins.

Hopkins has played in the league for 10 years, and has made 853 catches for 71, and has been a fantasy football WR-1 his entire career, according to the fantasy experts at Fanduel.

While this is an update of some kind, the truth here is we know nothing more than we did before and not much has changed. Hopkins will wait it out until the time is right to sign and the rest of us will have to wait patiently for an answer.
