Titans Film Room: Ryan Tannehill's Performance Worse Than It Seems

The Tennessee Titans lost their opening game of the season while watching quarterback Ryan Tannehill throw three interceptions and if it looked bad on television, it looked worse on the coaches film.

The Tennessee Titans came into the year worried about the offensive line and the wide receivers and offensive coordinator Tim Kelly's new playbook, but the biggest concern leaving Week 1 is the play of starting quarterback Ryan Tannehill.

It wasn't just the three interceptions for Tannehill, he also missed a ton of open throws while making poor decisions all day. Some of those poor decisions and bad reads are correctable as Tannehill gets more comfortable. It is only Week 1, after all.

However, there are some issues on the tape that won't be corrected with reps. Not only would they not be corrected, but they might get worse as the season rolls on. Those issues are all about Tannehill's physical decline.

Tannehill is 35 years old. He is not the athlete he was when he joined the Titans in 2019. He is older and has taken a beating the last four seasons. It only makes sense he would start to show signs of physical regression soon.

Those regressions show up in Tannehill's arm strength and his mobility. Tannehill underthrew a few balls on Sunday and then overthrew a few more as he tried to compensate. It is evident on the tape.

He has lost a lot of mobility as well. Tannehill always had some speed, he is a former wide receiver after all, but now he lacks quickness and burst and it makes it difficult to navigate messy pockets and even harder to make plays on the escape.

Tannehill never had great feel in the pocket, but now it looks like the beatings have taken a toll and he is very concerned about taking hits. Combine that with the athletic declines and it makes for some tough situations, like we saw Sunday.

Ultimately, the bad reads and decisions were the biggest issue and those should improve as Tannehill knocks off the rust, but the arm strength and mobility may decline as the season goes on and the current season's beatings start to take a toll.

It could make for a tough season for the old veteran.
