NASHVILLE — The Tennessee Titans are in the process of finalizing their new stadium plan. While there are many legal hoops to jump through and multiple different parties that need to get on the same page, it appears the Titans are approaching the finish line. The journey to this point has been extensive. Let’s take a look at the timeline of events.

The Scoop – February 2022

Outside of rumors and whispers, we first heard about the Titans’ plan to build a new stadium from Nate Rau of Axios news. The conversation between the Titans and the city of Nashville originally was focused on renovating the current Nissan stadium. As Rau points out, the renovation price tag was initially thought to be around the $600 million mark, but according to the team, that price tag nearly doubled, leading to the pivot to building a new stadium for a similar cost. Titans’ team president Burke Nihill explained why in a quote at the time.

"For example, the stadium's structural frame was built with concrete and needs to be largely replaced with steel. The mechanical, plumbing, and electrical systems need to be completely replaced. The window system throughout the building is so antiquated that it is not even manufactured anymore."

Building Timeline – March 2022

Nihill spoke again a month later and we got our first look at how long the building process could take and when the team expected the stadium to be ready for use.

“You’re looking at an 18-month schedule of design, working with architects and other designers to get the plans right. … A new building would be more predictable and a fast schedule. We’re looking at 30-to-31 months for a construction schedule on a new building because they’re not having to tiptoe or work around events.”

Titans Reveal Renderings – October 2022

The biggest question after new stadium plans were announced was what will the stadium look like. The Titans answered that late in 2022 when they released renderings of their planned building. The renderings included pictures of the front of the stadium showing what the surrounding area could look like and a video of the what the stadium could feel like on the inside. It was one of the more exciting steps in the process so far.

City Council Approves Term Sheet – December 2022

On December 20, 2022, Nashville’s Metro City Council approved the term sheet for the new stadium. While this wasn’t the final ‘yes’ the Titans needed to confirm the stadium, it was a big step in ironing out the financial plan for the new building. How much it would cost and where the money would come from being the biggest points to nail down.

City Council Final Voting Process – March 7, 2023/April 4, 2023/April 18, 2023

The final step for the Titans to get the city’s approval comes down to three votes over the first four months of the year. Here, city council members will make their final determination on whether to approve the new stadium plan. Three voting sessions take place to allow council members enough time to truly understand the plans and what they entail. So far, the first two voting sessions have resulted in a passing vote. The final session is the most important though and will take place from middle to late April.

At this time, the final vote has not taken place, but if approved, the Titans could be ready to break ground in the near future. The current timeline has not been locked down, but expectation is the stadium would be ready for use in 2026 or 2027. This new stadium would give the Titans and the city of Nashville a chance at hosting major events like the Super Bowl, Final Four, Wrestlemania and large concerts.
