NASHVILLE — The Tennessee Titans made their second cut of the day by releasing veteran wide receiver Robert Woods. The move is no surprise as the Titans sat at $23 million over the salary cap heading into Wednesday. Woods saves the Titans $12 million while costing them $2.6 million in dead cap space due to the remaining guaranteed money on his deal.

Woods was brought over to the Titans in a trade with the intention of being the Titans’ number two receiver behind AJ Brown. After AJ Brown was traded, Woods was forced into a role he was never expected to fill as the team’s top receiving option. At this stage in his career and most of his career prior, that is not the role Woods thrives in.

Woods performed admirably still. He led the Titans in catches with 52 and yards with 527 while scoring two touchdowns. Woods had some drops throughout the year, but with the disjointed nature of the Titans’ offense, it is hard to blame him. Woods certainly has some left in the tank, but the Titans’ offense needs an injection of youth and speed at the receiver position and those are two things Woods simply doesn’t bring at this point in his career.

Woods was acquired from the Los Angeles Rams prior to the 2022 season for a sixth-round pick in the 2023 NFL Draft. Woods was expected to fill the role vacated by Julio Jones release last offseason. The Titans have now dumped quite a few assets into that WR2 role and it appears going with a seasoned vet is not the route they will go now after both experiments, Jones and Woods, did not turn out to be as fruitful as the organization hoped.

With the release of Lewan and Woods, the Titans are now on the positive side of the salary cap. Lewan saved $14.8 million and Woods saved $12 million. Leaving the Titans at $3.8 million under the salary cap. More moves are expected to happen in the coming weeks as names like Bud Dupree, Zach Cunningham and Ryan Tannehill could all be released as well.
