Opposition To New Titans Stadium Coming From Committee Chair

NASHVILLE - A new domed stadium for the Tennessee Titans and the city of Nashville is in the planning stages. Still, opposition appears to be growing within the city government to the current plan.
According to a story from the Nashville Business Journal, Metro Council's East Bank Stadium Committee chairman Bob Mendes, shared concerns and opposition to the plan in a memo dated Feb.14th.
In his memo, Mendes wrote, "The proposed $2.1 billion stadium deal should be rejected. It's not good for the city or its finances," Mendes writes. "It's too large a subsidy with not enough benefit for Nashville."
"The narrative from the Mayor's Office and the team was able to stand for six months or longer before being shown as incomplete or inaccurate. Unfortunately, in the public dialogue about the stadium, once something has been 'true' for six months, it's hard to change that perspective even if the 'true' fact was actually false from the start," Mendes said.
In October, Nashville Mayor John Cooper and the Titans announced plans for the new stadium. Many residents of Davidson County opposed the project from its inception, but Mendes is the first prominent member of the Metro government to speak out against the proposal publicly.
It is unclear at this time what impact Mendes's memo will have on the plans moving forward, but this could be the first roadblock to the deal.
