The Titans will add veteran kicker Michael Badgley. Badgley has played five seasons in the NFL for five teams including a stint with the Titans in 2021. Badgley kicked for two teams in 2022, one game for the Chicago Bears and 12 games for the Detroit Lions.
In 2022, Badgley made 24 of his 28 field goal attempts and all of his 33 extra points. His longest make of the year came on a 53-yarder. Badgley actually made two of his three tries from over 50 yards.
Badgley has been far from consistent in his career with a 81.7% conversion rate on his field goals. As Titans fans may remember, Badgley missed his only field goal for the Titans in 2021 and missed one of his two extra points.
That inconsistency must have been easier to stomach than what they were seeing from the two young kickers the Titans waived to make room for Badgley. Shudak was in his second summer with the team and Wolff was an undrafted rookie. Neither has ever kicked in an NFL game and both had struggles during the preseason and training camp.
The Titans are in win-now mode with a roster full of veterans. Trusting the kicker position to a player who have never kicked in the regular season was always a risk. It appears based on these roster moves, it was a risk the Titans had decided they weren't willing to take.
Whether the Titans stick with Badgley remains to be seen as there is still time for the Titans to make more changes between now and the opening of the NFL regular season.
