NASHVILLE — The Tennessee Titans sit less than a week away from the start of 2023 training camp and they have two kickers on the roster that have never been in an NFL game. Caleb Shudak returns for year two after an injury knocked him out of action before the start of the 2022 season and undrafted free-agent rookie Trey Wolff out of Texas Tech.

From the Titans' actions so far this offseason you would think they are focused on winning as many games as possible and while one of these young and unproven kickers could be a diamond in the rough, leaving kicking duties to either of them seems incredibly risky.

One of the young kickers could even beat out a veteran in camp, but at least let a veteran come in there and add some pressure. That veteran should be Brett Maher and before you even say it, let's talk about his playoff performance in 2022.

Maher missed four PATs in a row and five total in two playoff games. It was embarrassing and understandably would leave a bad taste in your mouth. The Dallas Cowboys let his contract expire and Maher still sits available.

The problem is everyone lost sight of how great Maher was last season for Dallas. He made 90.6% of his kicks, making 29 out of 32 attempts. He made 50 out of a possible 53 PATs. He wasn't just accurate either, Maher has distance to his game.

Maher made nine kicks of 50+ yards or more out of 11 tries. The Titans tried only two such kicks with Randy Bullock last year because they know his range is limited. Maher even hit a 60 yard field goal. He would open things up for the Titans to get points where they simply couldn't the last two seasons.

Recently, special teams coach Craig Aukerman said the Titans focus on the 40-49 yard range and anything over 50 yards is a bonus. In 2022, Maher hit six of his seven tries in that range and was perfect on every kick less than 40 yards.

Maher's poor playoff ending may have poisoned the well on his perception, but the reality is Maher was a really good kicker last year and outperformed Bullock. Again, Maher may not beat out one of these young kickers if they surprise us, but the Titans would be wise to add a veteran to the equation to be safe.
