Tennessee Titans Secondary Named As 'Summer Concern' by The Athletic

In this story:
NASHVILLE — The Tennessee Titans have quite a few concerns with training camp just a few weeks away. The wide receiver room, the suspension of starting right tackle Nicholas Petit-Frere and the recently legal trouble for running back Hassan Haskins would all make the list, but according to The Athletic, the Titans' "summer concern" is the status of the secondary.
Joe Rexrode of The Athletic picked the well being of the Titans' defensive backs as the Titans' "summer concern" and while that is a concern that should be on the list, it is a surprise to see that concern as the one mentioned with all the other pressing issues the Titans have. Here is what Rexrode said about the concern.
"This could be a very good group, with Sean Murphy-Bunting joining Kristian Fulton and Roger McCreary to form a solid corner trio, with Kevin Byard and Amani Hooker making up what remains one of the best safety duos in the NFL, and with Elijah Molden back to plug in just about anywhere. But can Molden stay on the field after a serious groin injury robbed him of most of 2022? Can Fulton stay on the field after missing 20 of a possible 50 career games, mostly thanks to soft-tissue injuries? He’s also hoping for a new deal, and Byard just got asked to take a pay cut and skipped OTAs. The Titans’ playoff hopes rest on a great defense, which will require the best version of this secondary."
It is fair to have concern with the secondary though. The Titans gave up the most passing yards in the NFL last season after all. While you could blame poor performance, those who watched closely would know that the secondary was one of the most-affected areas during the Titans injury-plagued season.
If the Titans don't have a cleaner bill of health in the secondary it could leave them in a similar position as last season. The Titans didn't add much to the secondary this year outside of Sean Murphy-Bunting. They'll be banking on that cleaner bill of health from players who, so far, haven't shown the ability to give them that.
The players in the secondary are incredibly talented though and have all shown, when healthy, they can make plays and get the defense off the field. The Titans' pass rush is the foundation of the defense, but without competent secondary play it is tough to maximize it. That makes the status of the secondary a very fair concern heading into training camp.
