The Titans In Free-Agency, Some Interesting New Stats

Some interesting stats have been shared on Monday morning that general manager Ran Carthon should perhaps approach this free-agency period differently.

In this story:

NASHVILLE - As we enter the "legal tampering" period of NFL March Madness on Monday at noon, some interesting new numbers are circulating about the impact of the highest-spending teams in free agency.

According to a tweet from Field Yates, the teams that have spent the most in free agency over the last seven cycles have improved their win totals in the year following their spending sprees.

The Titans' division rivals, Jacksonville, have taken advantage of this trend twice in the last six seasons, and each time saw a seven-win improvement.

However, following the release of these numbers, another set of stats has emerged that indicates these high-spending teams don't have nearly as much success in year two after dishing out all that cash.

Per the numbers, these high-spending franchises have witnessed a drop in the second year, with the 2017 Giants suffering the most significant decline of -8 games, while the 2018 Jaguars dropped -5 with the 2019 Bears a -4 and the 2020 Jets a -5, while the 2021 Dolphins suffered the least decline to -1. Finally, the  2022 Patriots fell to-2 games.

While the numbers are still on the '22 Jaguars, the thought that immediately came to mind after reading these stats was maybe it's a good thing that the Titans don't have an overabundance to spend on potentially harmful contracts.

According to Sportracs, the Titans currently sit with the No.9 most cap space at $27,283,525 in available cash.

We don't know the plan or who the Titans might be targeting, but based on these numbers, it seems prudent to think that more short-term deals might be the best approach, so you potentially get the first-year bump but avoid the second-year decline.
