Why the Upcoming NFL Draft is So Important to the 49ers

Pretty soon, the combination of Purdy and Brandon Aiyuk (assuming they don't trade him) will cost them up to $90 million per season. And that's not factoring in Nick Bosa, the highest-paid non-quarterback in the NFL.

If the 49ers don't nail the upcoming draft, in a couple years they'll be the NFL's version of the Golden State Warriors without the Championships.

We just witnessed the humiliating demise of the Warriors dynasty. The front office held onto their core of stars too long and surrounded them with draft picks who didn't pan out, and now they need to blow up their roster and start over. They could not gracefully retool on the fly and remain competitive.

Which brings us back to the 49ers. They've held onto their aging core of stars for five years even though those players still haven't delivered a Lombardi Trophy. Soon, those guys will be gone. I'm talking George Kittle, Kyle Juszczyk, Trent Williams, Christian McCaffey, Deebo Samuel, Javon Hargrave and Charvarius Ward.

The 49ers will be fine if they can replenish their roster with young talented players like Brock Purdy and Ji'Ayir Brown. But those are literally the only two good players the 49ers have drafted the past two years. The 49ers are becoming one of the oldest teams in the league because they keep whiffing in the draft. I'm talking Danny Gray, Ty Davis-Price, Cameron Latu, Jake Moody, Trey Sermon, Ambry Thomas and of course Trey Lance.

That's why the 49ers have to draft well this year. Pretty soon, the combination of Purdy and Brandon Aiyuk (assuming they don't trade him) will cost them up to $90 million per season. And that's not factoring in Nick Bosa, the highest-paid non-quarterback in the NFL.

Time for an infusion of good, cheap, young players. The future of the organization depends on it.
