The Carolina Hurricanes announced today that they have hired Detroit Red Wings assistant Bill Peters as the team's new head coach.

Peters had previously served as the head coach of the WHL's Spokane Chiefs and the AHL's Rockford Ice Hogs. He also coached Team Canada to a gold medal at the 2008 Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament.

Kirk Muller had been the Canes' coach since 2011. He was fired at the end of this past season after his team finished seventh in the eight-team Metropolitan Division. Muller was 80-80-27 in three seasons with Carolina.

The team will introduce Peters at a press conference tomorrow at noon.
