Top NHL draft prospect Connor McDavid will be out five to six weeks with a broken bone in his hand, his junior team, the Erie Otters, announced Wednesday.
McDavid's injury is a fracture of the fifth metacarpal bone, the bone below the pinky finger. He was hurt in a fight Tuesday night during the Otters' game against the Mississauga Steelheads when he appeared to strike the glass after missing on a punch.
The 17-year-old was taken for X-rays when he left the game and was reportedly set to see a hand specialist Wednesday.
McDavid, 17, scored 99 points in 56 games last season and leads the OHL this year with 51 points in 18 games. He and Boston University forward Jack Eichel are widely considered the top prospects for the 2015 NHL draft.
