Hanzal has hat trick in Coyotes' rout of Canucks

VANCOUVER, British Columbia (AP) Martin Hanzal's second career NHL hat trick was nearly six years in the making.

Hanzal scored three straight goals - including two only 9 seconds apart - and Devan Dubnyk made 35 saves in Arizona's first shutout of the season as the Coyotes routed the Vancouver Canucks 5-0 on Friday night.

Hanzal's only other three-goal game came in December 2008 against Toronto.

''I had a really poor last couple of games, so I was kind of waiting for tonight,'' he said. ''I knew I had to be really good tonight, and I thought we had a really good effort from the whole group.''

Shane Doan and Keith Yandle, on a power play in the final three minutes, also had goals for Arizona (7-9-1).

The Coyotes, who entered last in the Western Conference and 28th overall in the NHL, ended their three-game losing streak. Dave Tippett earned his 200th career coaching win.

''Obviously, our most important player is Martin Hanzal,'' Doan said. ''When he's rolling, we're a better team, and he got rolling tonight.''

The Canucks (12-6) lost for only the third time in 11 games. Ryan Miller allowed four goals on 13 shots in the first two periods.

Arizona scored the only goal in the first period despite being outshot 12-3. The Canucks held a 35-23 shots advantage overall.

Dubnyk earned the win and his ninth NHL shutout in his first start since allowing five goals in a Nov. 2 victory over Washington.

Dubnyk's previous shutout came on Dec. 27, 2013, while he was with Edmonton against Calgary.

''Anytime you come in here, it's always an easy game to get engaged,'' Dubnyk said. ''It's always nice to get some shots early and get a chance to find some pucks and feel it a little bit, and they got some early.''

Hanzal opened the scoring off a counter-attack 14:56 into the game, beating Miller with a quick shot to the short side. The Coyotes were limited to just one shot in the first 11:30, and managed only two in the same span in the second.

Hanzal scored his second of the game at 15:25 of the middle period when he deflected in a high shot by Tobias Rieder. The goal was allowed to stand after an extended video review.

Hanzal completed his hat trick at 15:34 when beat Miller to the blocker side.

Doan's goal with less than three seconds left in the second gave Arizona its third goal on just three shots.

''I don't think we were hungry enough,'' Vancouver coach Willie Desjardins said. ''We played OK, but OK doesn't win you any games in this league.''

NOTES: Vancouver forwards Derek Dorsett and Radim Vrbta returned after they both missed two games with undisclosed injuries. ... The Coyotes put D David Schlemko on waivers. ... Coyotes forward B.J. Crombeen played in his 400th NHL game. ... Canucks rookie C Bo Horvat was a healthy scratch.
