Report: Significant changes proposed to World Cup of Hockey

Tuesday November 18th, 2014

Organizers for the World Cup of Hockey have proposed significant changes to the tournament's format, according to a report from Sportsnet's Chris Johnston

Johnston reports that the tournament would feature six teams: Canada, the United States, Sweden, Finland, Russia and the Czech Republic, along with two other teams. One of the other teams would be an all-star team made up of players from European countries without their own teams; the other could be a team made up of the game's top young stars.

A report from a Czech website in September said the tournament would be contested in September 2016.

The World Cup was contested twice before, in 1996 and 2004. It was preceded by the Canada Cup, which was contested five times between 1976 and 1991.
