Gustav Nyquist's spinning backhand mirrors 11-year-old Datsyuk tally
In his book Common Sense, George Santayana wrote, "Those who cannot remember the past, are condemned to repeat it."
Maybe it's time for Roberto Luongo to get a history lesson.
On Friday, Detroit Red Wings forward Gustav Nyquist rifled a spinning backhand shot over the Panthers goalie's glove hand and into the top corner. While the goal itself was highlight-reel worthy, it gave some Reddit users a case of deja vu, and with good reason.
The goal was an almost exact clone of a tally Nyquist's teammate Pavel Datsyuk scored against Luongo during his first run with Florida, almost 11 years ago to the day.
A side-by-side comparison shows the eerie similarities, right down to the same (if updated) advertising on the boards behind the net:
You have to give it to Luongo, though. It's not easy to be that consistent over an 11-year span.
