Capitals' Alex Ovechkin joins elite company with 30th goal of season

Alex Ovechkin scored his 30th goal of the season against the Blues on Sunday, making him the fifth player in NHL history to reach the mark in each of his first10 seasons.

By scoring on St. Louis goalie Brian Elliott in the first period, Ovechkin's name now sits alongside Hall of Famers Wayne Gretzky, Mike Bossy, Mike Gartner and Jari Kurri.

Washington's captain now has 453 goals in 729 NHL games, the fourth highest total among active players (behind Jaromir Jagr, Jarome Iginla and Marian Hossa), and he sits at 56th on the all-time list. Gretzky's 894 tallies give him the record while Gartner sits seventh overall with 708, Kurri at 18th with 601 and Bossy's 573 goals put him at 21st. Ovechkin's career mark of .62 goals per game is the sixth-best in league history and tops among current NHLers, ahead of Gretzky's .601 mark, but well behind that of Bossy's all-time best of .762.

Making feat more difficult is the fact Ovechkin accomplished it despite playing in the lockout shortened 2012-13 season in which he notched 32 goals in just 48 games.

Ovechkin finished the day with one more goal in the 4-3 loss, but it was his first that entered him into the history books and sent the fans home happy by getting everyone in attendance a free Roy Rogers sandwich.
