Toronto Maple Leafs defenseman Roman Polak will undergo hernia surgery and miss the rest of the season, the team announced.

Polak, 28, finishes his first year in Toronto with five goals and nine points in 56 games. The Leafs acquired him in a deal with St. Louis in the offseason. The club called up defenseman Petter Granberg from the AHL's Toronto Marlies on an emergency basis in a corresponding move.

Polak marks the second injury loss in a matter of days for the Leafs. Over the weekend, Toronto announced veteran defenseman Stephane Robidas would undergo shoulder surgery and miss the rest of the season.

Toronto sits seventh in the Atlantic division and out of playoff contention with 57 points.
