Sometimes you daydream while you’re on the job. Your mind wanders to where you're going for happy hour, or to the things you need to pick up at the store for your spouse, and for the most part, it’s O.K. to be doing that.
But it’s not O.K. to be daydreaming when you’re the goalie of an NHL team late in the third period of a tied game, especially when you give up the game-winning goal because of it.
That’s exactly what happened to Ondrej Pavelec of the Winnipeg Jets on Tuesday night.
A neutral zone face-off win by the Blues led to the puck landing on Barret Jackman’s stick halfway between the red line and blue line. From there, Jackman fired it on net and the shot beat Pavelec glove side with 1:03 left in the game, giving the Blues a 5-4 win.
It was not pretty.
Not only did it cost the Jets the game, but it halted a furious Winnipeg comeback that featured three straight third-period goals.
The Blues improved to 42-19-5 with the win, while the Jets fell to 33-22-12.
