Hemsky scores 2, Seguin gets SO winner as Stars beat Flames

CALGARY, Alberta (AP) The Dallas Stars need every point they can get. They gladly took two on Wednesday night.

Ales Hemsky scored twice in regulation, Tyler Seguin had the only goal in the shootout, and Dallas beat the Calgary Flames 4-3 for its seventh win in eight games.

Jamie Benn also scored for the Stars, six points behind Winnipeg for the second Western Conference wild-card spot with eight games left this season.

''This was a game that we needed two points. We had to get two points somehow,'' Dallas coach Lindy Ruff said. ''It's a situation where we might have to run the table, and in all reality that might not get you in.''

Seguin got a shot past Karri Ramo in the first round of the shootout, and Stars goalie Kari Lehtonen was perfect against Joe Colborne, Johnny Gaudreau and Sean Monahan to get the victory.

''It's been exciting the last couple weeks. We've been playing well and getting results and climbing a little bit, but we still have a little bit to go,'' said Lehtonen, who improved to 33-14-10.

Deryk Engelland got his first two goals of the season, and Gaudreau also scored for Calgary. The Flames remained third in the Pacific Division, one point up on Los Angeles - which sits outside of a playoff spot but has played one fewer game.

''Early on, it seemed we had no energy. We were coming from a day off and for one of the rare times, we got outskated,'' Flames coach Bob Hartley said. ''We battled back, and looking at the situation it's a huge point, but at this time we're shooting for two.''

Calgary trailed 3-2 after two periods before Engelland tied it with his second of the night with 8:41 remaining. The defenseman, who also tied it at 2 in the second, got the puck at the blue line and sent a floater toward the net that found the top corner.

Engelland's first career two-goal game came after he had gone without a goal in his last 77 games, dating back to season.

''No matter if you score one or two or none, two points is what we need. And coming down the stretch we'll take one, but we needed that other one, too,'' said Engelland, who signed with the Flames as a free agent last summer after spending his entire career with Pittsburgh.

Lehtonen finished with 31 saves through overtime, and Ramo stopped 27 shots.

The first five goals all came in the second, and Hemsky's second of the game gave the Stars a 3-2 lead with 16 seconds remaining in the period. With the teams playing 4-on-4, Shawn Horcoff brought the puck up ice on a 2-on-1, hung onto it patiently and set up Hemsky near the far post for an open net.

Dallas got on the scoreboard 47 seconds into the second when Hemsky skated over the blue line and beat Ramo with a wrist shot to the top corner.

Jason Spezza set up Benn on a power play for an easy tap-in exactly 10 minutes later to make it 2-0.

Gaudreau cut the Flames' deficit in half when he slipped a shot through Lehtonen's pads with 7:16 left in the period. It was his 21st goal of the season, and he leads all rookies with 58 points.

Engelland tied it 1:05 later with a wrist shot from the blue line.

NOTES: Flames D Dennis Wideman played in career game No. 700. ... Calgary has three defensemen with 40 points (Wideman, Mark Giordano, T.J. Brodie) for the first time since 1987-88. That team scored 397 goals. Calgary has 213 goals this season. ... Benn has 13 points (six goals, seven assists) in his last six games against Calgary. ...
