Watch: Capitals' Alex Ovechkin nets his 50th goal of the season
Great 8 has done it again.
Alex Ovechkin hit the 50-goal plateau in the first period on Tuesday’s game against the Carolina Hurricanes with a wrist shot from the top of the left circle, completing the feat for the second consecutive season. The goal also tied Peter Bondra’s Washington record for most goals in a career with the Caps.

Last season, Ovechkin finished with 51 goals after three down years of having goal totals in the 30s, though one of them was during the locked-out 2012-13 season where he played 48 games. He now has six 50-goal seasons in his career, trailing only Mike Bossy and Wayne Gretzky, who had nine.
Ovechkin remains the only NHL player since the 2011-12 season to record 50 goals. In 2011-12, Steven Stamkos tallied 60 goals while Evgeni Malkin finished with 50.
Since making his NHL debut in 2005-06, Ovi has scored 472 goals for the Capitals. Of active players, only Jaromir Jagr, Jarome Iginla and Marian Hossa have more goals than Ovechkin.
