Alex Ovechkin scored roughly 13 minutes into the first period Wednesday night off of a slick pass from Nicklas Bäckström via Marcus Johansson, putting the Washington Capitals up 1–0 early over the New York Rangers in the two teams' decisive Game 7 of the Eastern Conference semifinals. The Capitals led by that same margin at the end of the first period. 

The winner of Wednesday night's game will go on to face the Tampa Bay Lightning in the NHL's Eastern Conference finals series. Tampa Bay dispatched the Montreal Canadiens Tuesday night 4–1
