Ex-Sharks coach Todd McLellan to be named Oilers coach Tuesday
The Edmonton Oilers will name former San Jose Sharks head coach Todd McLellan as their head coach on Tuesday at a press conference, according to TSN.
The Sharks and McLellan mutually agreed to part ways last month despite McLellan accumulating a 311–163–66 career record and leading the Sharks to six playoff berths.
The Oilers fired former head coach Dallas Eakins as well as two assistant coaches and a team video coordinator last December after the team started the season 7–19–5. Interim coach Todd Nelson took over in place of Eakins.
McLellan on Sunday led the Canadian national hockey team to victory in the World Hockey Championship in Prague. The team netted a 6–1 victory over Russia in the championship game.
After San Jose missed the Stanley Cup playoffs for the first time since 2003, longtime center Joe Thornton was obliquely critical of McLellan.
When the San Jose Mercury-News asked Thornton if a coaching change was needed, he said, "I have no idea. Todd has to talk to his family. Maybe he should talk to this family as well in here. We'll see what happens."
