Senators owner leaves hospital after liver transplant

OTTAWA, Ontario (AP) Ottawa Senators team owner Eugene Melnyk has been discharged from a Toronto hospital after undergoing a liver transplant last month.

The team says in a statement Wednesday that the anonymous donor also been discharged.

Melnyk's post-transplant recovery will require weekly follow-up with his transplant team. He's been transferred to a facility that will provide daily rehabilitation services.

More than 500 people offered to be a donor for the billionaire owner following a public appeal by the team. Melnyk was suffering end-stage liver failure due to an undisclosed disease of the organ.

Doctors performed the transplant on May 19. Liver transplant recipients typically stay in hospital for up to two weeks, then take up to six months to recover fully.
