Oilers to honor former coach Glen Sather with banner

EDMONTON, Alberta (AP) The Edmonton Oilers will raise a banner at Rexall Place to honor former coach, general manager and executive Glen Sather.

The ceremony will take place Dec. 11 before a game against the New York Rangers. Sather, who coached the Oilers to four Stanley Cup championships, is currently Rangers president.

Sather will become the ninth Oiler to be honored with a banner, joining Al Hamilton, Wayne Gretzky, Jari Kurri, Grant Fuhr, Paul Coffey, Mark Messier, Glenn Anderson and long-time radio broadcaster Rod Phillips.

Sather was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1997. He won Stanley Cups as Oilers head coach in 1984, 1985, 1987 and 1988) and a fifth in 1990 as the team's president and general manager.

He played 10 NHL seasons, appeared in 72 playoff games, and also played one season with the Oilers in 1976-77 when the team was part of the World Hockey Association.
