Bruins say Zdeno Chara will skip opening night

Boston Bruins captain Zdeno Chara (upper body injury) will sit out the team’s season-opening game on Thursday night.

BOSTON (AP) — Boston Bruins defenseman Zdeno Chara will miss Thursday night’s game against the Winnipeg Jets because he’s not ready to return after an upper body injury.

The 2009 Norris Trophy winner has been out since he sustained the injury in a Sept. 24 exhibition against the New York Rangers. Coach Claude Julien said after the morning skate that Chara won't be active for the season opener.

Chara says he’s just not ready.

The Bruins are hoping to bounce back from a season in which they missed the playoffs for the first time since 2007.
