Washington Capitals star Alex Ovechkin was benched for the team’s 5–0 loss to the San Jose Sharks on Tuesday night after he slept through morning practice, reports Isabelle Khurshudyan of the Washington Post.

Ovechkin (call him “The Late 8”) says he missed the morning skate session after he set his alarm for 8:30 p.m. instead of 8:30 a.m. When he arrived at the Capitals’ facility, head coach Barry Trotz told him he wouldn’t play.

Before the game, Trotz said that Ovechkin was a “game-time decision” due to personal reasons.

“We tried to not make a big deal of it yesterday because it was a game day,” Trotz said.

In one game this season, Ovechkin has one goal and one assist and his Capitals are 0-2. He is expected to play against the Chicago Blackhawks on Thursday.
