Chimera scores twice to lead Washington past Flyers 5-2

PHILADELPHIA (AP) The Washington Capitals know how to bounce back from a defeat.

Jason Chimera had two goals and an assist to lead the Capitals to a 5-2 victory over the slumping Philadelphia Flyers on Thursday night.

T.J. Oshie, Nicklas Backstrom and Justin Williams all scored for Washington, which won its third in four games while avoiding losing consecutive games for the first time this season.

''You've got to understand that you can't accept losing,'' Capitals coach Barry Trotz said. ''Put the last one behind you and get really committed. I think we had a lot more conviction in our game tonight and probably more than the last three or four. It showed. I think guys enjoy playing that way.''

Washington's Alex Ovechkin remained one goal shy of becoming the top Russian-born goal scorer in NHL history.

Ovechkin, tied with Sergei Fedorov at 483 career goals, appeared to take the lead when his slap shot beat Steve Mason with 38 seconds left in the second period. The goal, however, was disallowed after an officials' review determined that Williams was offside on the play.

It was about the only thing that went wrong for Washington.

''(Williams) owes me dinner,'' Ovechkin joked. ''No, it's not his fault. He was a player of the game.''

Ovechkin will try for the record on Friday night when Washington hosts Calgary.

''It would be nice to do it in front of our fans,'' he said.

Scott Laughton and Claude Giroux had goals for Philadelphia, which has lost four straight at home and eight of its last nine overall.

''I'm concerned, that's it, bottom line,'' Flyers coach Dave Hakstol said. ''But we're going to go back to work tomorrow to make sure we push things in the right direction.''

The Capitals turned a one-goal deficit into a 4-2 lead with three goals in a 7 1/2-minute span of the second period.

''If you make mistakes against that team, they put it in the back of the net,'' Hakstol said.

Chimera finished a deft pass from Evgeny Kuznetsov with just over 10 minutes remaining in the period to tie the score at 2 with a power-play goal.

Williams used his skate to corral a rebound and then deked Mason from close range to put Washington up 3-2 with 9:21 left in the period.

And Chimera finished the scoring barrage by netting his second of the game and fifth of the season with a deflection from the slot that ricocheted off the post and in.

The Flyers responded to Wednesday's intense practice that followed Tuesday's 4-0 home loss to Colorado in a strong way, taking a 1-0 lead 3:24 into the game on Laughton's third goal of the season. Oshie tied it with 9:25 left in the first after Kuznetsov's pretty feed from behind the net.

Giroux regained the lead for the Flyers with a power-play goal just 1:07 into the second period on a shot from the left boards that found its way past Braden Holtby, who was screened by Wayne Simmonds on the play.

Mason, Philadelphia's No. 1 goalie, returned to the lineup after backup Michal Neuvirth got the nod in the last four games. He made 27 saves.

The Flyers have 14 goals in their last nine games, all of which they have been outshot by the opposition.

''I don't think we're shooting the puck enough,'' Hakstol said. ''I think we're turning down too many opportunities, not necessarily on Grade A opportunities, just entering the zone, getting pucks to the net. It's something we've got to do a better job of. I don't think we throw enough pucks to the net.''

NOTES: Washington won for just the second time in the last eight games against the Flyers and first in the last eight trips to Philadelphia with Ovechkin in the lineup. ... Philadelphia RW Jakub Voracek continued his early season slump, making it 16 games without a goal. Voracek had 81 points last season, but he has just five assists this season. ... The Flyers, who entered second-to-last in the league by allowing 34.3 shots per game, were outshot, 32-20.
