Report: CWHL's Canadiennes, NWHL's Pride to face off at Winter Classic

The Boston–Montreal rivalry will get an early early at the 2016 Winter Classic. Prior to the Bruins and Canadiens showdown on New Year’s Day, teams from a pair of women’s professional hockey leagues will reportedly go head to head.

On New Year’s Eve the CWHL’s Montreal Canadiennes and the NWHL’s Boston Pride will face off at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, according to Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman. The game will mark the first meeting between the two largest professional women’s hockey leagues. The CWHL is in it’s ninth season, while the NWHL is in it’s first.

While both rosters feature a number of Olympians and national team members, several from the U.S. Olympic squad will be missing due to team commitments.

Despite missing players like Knight, the game will be a landmark matchup in women's hockey history.
