Watch: Avalanche RW Jarome Iginla scores 600th career goal

Colorado Avalanche right winger Jarome Iginla scored the 600th goal of his career.

Colorado Avalanche right winger Jarome Iginla scored the 600th goal of his career during Monday’s game against the Los Angeles Kings in Denver.

In the third period on an Avalanche power play, Iginla shot the puck toward the net in what looked like a pass to teammate Matt Duchene. However, the puck deflected off the skate of Kings defenseman Jake Muzzin to give the Avalanche their fourth goal of the game. Colorado’s bench cleared to join the right winger on the ice to congratulate him.

“I was going to take it to the net, I believe it was Landy who had his stick out in front and I was just looking for him, trying to put something through for him and I just put it toward the net and obviously it was a very fortunate bounce,” Iginla said in a postgame interview. “It felt good. It feels pretty cool.”

The 18-year-veteran signed with the Avalanche in 2014. He was with the Boston Bruins the season before, and spent 16 seasons with the Calgary Flames, where he began his career in 1996.

Iginla’s last goal, No. 599, was on Dec. 27 in Colorado’s 2–1 overtime loss to the Arizona Coyotes. The right winger had a chance to score his 600th goal on Saturday against his former team, the Flames. Iginla admitted it would have been nice to score the goal during that game.

“It is something I have been thinking about for a little bit,” Iginla said after Monday’s game. “You try not to, but every scoring chance you get, you think ‘OK, here maybe this one?’ So it’s nice to get it.”

Iginla now sits at No. 19 on the NHL’s list off all-time goal scorers, and his next goal will tie him with JariKurri. He has 11 goals and 10 assists on the season.
