Patrick Roy once again dons pads for Avalanche to prepare for alumni game

Patrick Roy returned to his familiar spot between the pipes for the Colorado Avalanche on Thursday.

Colorado Avalanche head coach and former goaltender Patrick Roy strapped on the pads and got back between the pipes Thursday afternoon.

The 50-year-old was sharpening his skills in preparation for the NHL Stadium Series alumni game against the Detroit Red Wings on Feb. 26. Alumni games are played more for entertainment’s sake, but don’t tell that to this fiery competitor.

Roy retired as a player in 2003 after one final playoff run. He finished his illustrious career with a 551–315–131 record in 1,029 regular season games, with 66 shutouts, a 2.54 GAA and a .912 save percentage. He sits behind only Martin Brodeur for most wins by a goalie in NHL history.

The 2006 Hockey Hall of Fame inductee was named head coach of the Avalanche in 2013. The team holds a 110–71–23 record in 204 regular season games under his reign.
