Alexander Ovechkin became the 43rd player in NHL history to reach 500 goals in his career with a power play goal against Senators on Sunday.

Ovechkin, 30, played his 800th game in the NHL on Saturday against the New York Rangers. His 500th goal came in his 801st, which makes him the fifth-fastest to reach the milestone behind Hall of Famers Wayne Gretzky, Mario Lemieux, Mike Bossy and Brett Hull.

Late in the second period of Washington’s game against the Senators, Ovechkin ripped a shot from the left circle past goalie Andrew Hammond for a power play goal that gave the Capitals a 5–1 lead.

His 500 goals are the most among all NHL players since he entered the league in 2005, which includes six seasons in which he scored 50 goals or more.

Ovechkin now has 38 points with 13 assists and 25 goals on the year.

The Capitals are 31-7-3, good for 1st place in the Metropolitan Division.
