After more than 600 games and 200 goals, Patrick Kane certainly picked the right day to finally notch his career first regular season hat trick. 

On National Hat Day in the U.S., the Chicago Blackhawks forward potted a trio of goals in a 4-1 win over the Maple Leafs at Air Canada Centre on Friday night. 

Kane opened the scoring 13:07 into the second period, catching goalie James Reimer out of position on a chance up close. Just over four minutes later, Kane struck again to double the lead on a power play, corralling a cross-ice pass in his feet from Artemi Panarin. Kane then sealed the Blackhawks 10th straight victory and collected the hat trick with an empty-netter, his 28th goal of the year.

The tallies put him ahead of Washington Capitals forward Alex Ovechkin (26) for the league lead. Kane added an assist on Panarin’s goal, and he now sits atop the NHL in assists (39), points (67) and power play goals (14) in 47 games.

With the win, Chicago tops the Western Conference with a 30-13-4 record.
