Phaneuf, who was Toronto’s captain, heads to Ottawa along with forwards Matt Frattin, Casey Bailey, Ryan Rupert and defenseman Cody Donaghey. Toronto receives defenseman Jared Cowen, forwards Colin Greening, Milan Michalek and Tobias Lindberg, and the Senators’ second-round pick in the 2017 NHL Draft.

The centerpiece of the deal, Phaneuf, 30, is a three-time All-Star who has scored 120 career goals with the Flames and Maple Leafs. He’s scored 24 points in 51 games this season.

The Maple Leafs host the Flames at 9 p.m. ET on Tuesday, while the Senators have the night off.
