For someone who entered the season as an 18-year-old super-prospect and the No. 2 draft pick, Jack Eichel has often flown below the radar during his rookie season with the Buffalo Sabres.
Perhaps that’s what happens when you’re in Connor McDavid’s shadow or when the likes of Artemi Panarin, Dylan Larkin and Shayne Gostisbehere unexpectedly have banner rookie years.
While Eichel might miss out on a Calder Trophy nomination, he’s been a solid performer for the Sabres, with an occasional dash of spectacular.
He had perhaps his most spectacular dash of the season on Sunday. He went end-to-end, around two Avalanche and ripped a shot through the legs of defenseman Tyson Barrie and past goalie Semyon Varlamov.
It was his 17th goal and 38th point of the season, the third- and second-best rookie totals in 2015-16.
As the Sabres broadcast says, “Add another one to the Eichel Tower.”
