Watch: Sabres’ Legwand scores from his own zone
With 227 goals in his 1,112-game NHL career career, David Legwand is not known as a sniper. But the 35-year-old Buffalo Sabres forward definitely isn’t going to forget goal No. 228 in game No. 1,113 anytime soon.
Deep in his defensive end on a penalty kill late in the first period on Friday night, he flipped the puck toward the Columbus Blue Jackets’ net on what seemed like a harmless clearing attempt—until it bounced in front of goalie Joonas Korpisalo. The wicked hop handcuffed the 21-year-old netminder, and the result wasn’t pretty.

It’s a 149-footer that Korpisalo probably already wants back, but sometimes the stars just line up perfectly.
The tally was Legwand’s fifth of the season to give Buffalo a 1-0 lead.
