The Washington Capitals have acquired Buffalo Sabres defenseman Mike Weber in for exchange for a third-round pick in the 2017 NHL draft, the team announced on Tuesday.

“We are pleased to welcome Mike to our organization,” Capitals general manager Brian MacLellan said in a press release. “Mike is a stay-at-home defenseman, who plays a physical game and is respected by his teammates. We felt it was important to add depth to our blueline by adding another quality veteran defenseman.”

Weber, 28, has played his entire NHL career with Buffalo beginning in 2007. He has tallied one goal, four assists and 32 penalty minutes in 35 games with the Sabres this season. The 6'2", 217-pound defenseman was drafted in the second round of the 2006 NHL draft and served as the Sabres’ alternate captain during the 2013–14 season and 2014–15 season.

Buffalo will retain 50% of Weber’s remaining contract.

The Capitals play the Montreal Canadiens at home on Wednesday night.
