Gerard Gallant will replace Peter DeBoer, who is citing personal reasons for relinquishing his role as an assistant coach for the World Cup of Hockey's North America team.

The switch was announced Sunday by the NHL and NHL Players' Association, who are co-sponsoring the eight-team tournament to be held in Toronto in September.

DeBoer is in his first season coaching the San Jose Sharks. In November, he was named to the team's staff headed by Edmonton's Todd McLellan.

Gallant is in his second season coaching the Florida Panthers.

The North American team will be comprised of American and Canadian players 23 years and younger.

On Wednesday, teams are scheduled to name the first 16 players selected to their eventual 23-player rosters. The final seven selections are due June 1.
